ROCK SOMETHING- Storm Riders Review - 4 out of 5
http://rocksomething.com/reviews/reviewPhantomX.html
Originally handpicked by a local rock DJ to form a Dio tribute band, Phantom-X still hold a fist aloft to the sounds of heyday heavy metal, but long gone are the days when this Dallas quartet were merely cover artists. In truth, it’s easy to see why said disc jockey would deem this thunderous foursome worthy of such a task, as Phantom-X clearly have a similarly unpretentious hard rock rhythm.
There’s no need for glitzy production methods here, instead the album is recorded to capture the athleticism of the playing and the power of the songs – something that you’d expect from the supervising talents of Stan Winfield who has worked with Pantera, King Diamond and Damageplan amongst others. Yet despite the straightforward approach by the Texans, there’s still a sense of fun surrounding “Storm Riders” – something all too often absent from American metal. Of course this is mainly due to the marketplace, but typically it’s European acts that create records like these and it will come as no surprise that Phantom-X have gone down a storm in the Euro-zone.
The reason for this is simple: their music has the old-fashioned power of bands like Dio and Iron Maiden, whilst being fast and furious like Primal Fear, Edguy and Hammerfall. Think Iced Earth, and you’ll have a good idea of what to expect. Songs such as the title track, “Join the Revolution” and “Road Killer” create an admirable rumble that lasts long into the night.
